‘Superpoke’ To Be No More, Thanks To Google

Facebook

angry tapir writes “Apparently the age of ‘superpoking’ social network friends and throwing sheep at them is coming to a close. Google plans to shut down the social applications developed by Slide, a company it acquired a year ago for US$182 million. Slide products include SuperPoke, and photo management and decorating tools like Slideshow and FunPix. Slide’s applications like Slideshow were very popular on MySpace during its heyday, and found success on other social networking sites, including Facebook, where the sheep-throwing feature of SuperPoke caught on, entertaining and annoying many.”

Automatic Spelling Corrections On Github

AI

An anonymous reader writes “Github projects may be seeing a different kind of contributor than normal: a small bot is now crawling through projects, contributing spelling corrections. It builds on top of the github API and existing documentation style-checking code. Future directions for the project look beyond spelling mistakes and at automated bug fixing on a large scale.”

Mass. Court Says Constitution Protects Filming On-Duty Police

Government

Even in a country and a world where copyright can be claimed as an excuse to prevent you from taking a photo of a giant sculpture in a public, tax-paid park, and openly recording visiting police on your own property can be construed as illegal wiretapping, it sometimes seems like the overreach of officialdom against people taking photos or shooting video knows no bounds. It’s a special concern now that seemingly everyone over the age of 10 is carrying a camera that can take decent stills and HD video. it’s refreshing, therefore, to read that a Federal Appeals Court has found unconstitutional the arrest of a Massachusetts lawer who used his phone to video-record an arrest on the Boston Common. (Here’s the ruling itself, as a PDF.) From the linked article, provided by reader schwit1: “In its ruling, which lets Simon Glik continue his lawsuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in Boston said the wiretapping statute under which Glik was arrested and the seizure of his phone violated his First and Fourth Amendment rights.”

Google Is Grooming Chrome As a Game Platform

Chrome

An anonymous reader writes with this snippet from Conceivably Tech: “On Friday I noticed that Google is heavily pushing New Game, a game developer conference that is focused on HTML5-based gaming content — and, of course, content that runs in web browsers. The fact that such an event already exists and that there is game content being developed in HTML5, is quite stunning by itself. However, Google also noted that a sandboxed native client (NaCl) with 3D (in addition to 2D) will be available in Chrome soon, which will allow the browser to connect to traditional C and C++ code via its integrated Pepper API.”

iPad 3 With A6 Processor Not Possible Until June 2012?

A6 processor

According to an analyst at The Linley Group, a chip consultancy firm, Apple’s A6 system-on-chip won’t make it to the iPad 3 until July 2012. The A6 processor, successor to the 1 GHz dual-core A5 chip presently powers iPad 2, is expected to power future version of the iPad and iPhone.

We had earlier heard reports of the A6 chips being produced on a trial basis by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

But according to the analyst, the rumored A6 chip would reach production stage in the second quarter of 2012 if all goes well. Since the release of the iPad, Apple has maintained a yearly upgrade cycle for these processors and if the analysts’ claims are true, this cycle could hit a roadblock. He says:

“A final version of the chip will enter production in 2Q12 ‘at the earliest’… We believe this timing makes sense. This pace would make the A6 one of the first 28 [nanometer] mobile processors (along with Qualcomm’s MSM8960) to enter production. This schedule, however, breaks Apple’s annual processor-upgrade cycle and will delay any products using the A6 until at least June 2012.”

The iPads are the first ones to feature Apple’s improved processors, and if Apple wants to maintain this trend it could delay the iPad 3 launch. Considering a scenario where Apple drifts away from this trend and chooses to stick to its Q1 launch of the iPad, the analyst says:

“[Apple] will have to use the same A5 processor as the current iPad 2, relying on the rumored new high-resolution ‘Retina’ display to drive the upgrade cycle.”

The analysts’ research note suggests that the A6 chip would be based on ARM’s Cortex-A9 quad core design. The chip would compete head to head with a similar quad-core offering from NVIDIA, which is expected to power Windows 8 and Android devices. The A6 chip would not only house double the cores found on the A5 processor, it would also use TSMC’s 3D technology akin to Intel’s Tri-Gate technology.

The research note agrees to the fact that Apple has indeed switched to TMSC from Samsung as a manufacturer for their processors, perhaps a consequence of the strained relations Apple presently shares with Samsung. As per the analyst, there are risks associated with switching manufacturers, citing an example where TSMC had problems dealing with new technology resulting in defects like Nvidia’s ‘bump-crack’ issue.

All in all the A6 chip seems to be a huge upgrade over the current generation A5 chips, but when Apple chooses to introduce them in its iOS devices can only be speculated. What would you want – a scheduled iPad 3 launch sans the A6 chip or a delayed launch with one?

Ask Slashdot: Math Curriculum To Understand General Relativity?

Math

First time accepted submitter sjwaste writes “Slashdot posts a fair number of physics stories. Many of us, myself included, don’t have the background to understand them. So I’d like to ask the Slashdot math/physics community to construct a curriculum that gets me, an average college grad with two semesters of chemistry, one of calculus, and maybe 2-3 applied statistics courses, all the way to understanding the mathematics of general relativity. What would I need to learn, in what order, and what texts should I use? Before I get killed here, I know this isn’t a weekend project, but it seems like it could be fun to do in my spare time for the next … decade.”

rob_sweater.pngNot only did he skate to where the puck was going to be, he reshaped the rink, redefined the arena… and replaced the puck with the Mighty Mouse.

The debate will rage for a long time over what piece of technology best encapsulates Steve Jobs’ influence on our world: The iPhone? iPod? iMac? iPad? OS X and Aqua? But I’m going to argue for something a lot more low-tech: the turtleneck.

That, to me, captures the excitement Jobs both conveyed and sparked in others over his vision. It wasn’t just another gadget or a feature or an online service; it was his ability to say This can help you change things.

I don’t share the whole of that vision, but I’ve shared his excitement many, many times. (It takes no effort at all to conjure the memory of watching the simulcast from the Stevenote that announced iTunes and the larger digital hub vision… and my breathless call home to share the news with Alex.) And in the face of an often-jaded Silicon Valley, Jobs could consistently elicit gasps.

Every indication suggests Steve Jobs is now on a very difficult road. I wish him well. And I thank him for those moments of astonishment and wonder.

Trailrunner7 writes “A new worm called Morto has begun making the rounds on the Internet, infecting machines via Remote Desktop Protocol. The worm is generating a large amount of outbound RDP traffic on networks that have infected machines, and Morto is capable of compromising both servers and workstations running Windows. Users who have seen Morto infections are reporting in Windows help forums that the worm is infecting machines that are completely patched and are running clean installations of Windows Server 2003.”
